Reducing Waste

It's time to fill better and reduce plastic waste
while enjoying the products you love.

In today's world, any responsible company has a duty to do all it can to reduce waste and prevent pollution. The future of our planet depends on our actions today! At L'OCCITANE, we've been focusing on ways to reduce, reuse and recycle for many years, but there's still more we can do. And we're working on it!

Did you know?

Alarming fact: By 2050, there could be more plastic than fish in the ocean.

What we do: Over 70% of our packaging can be easily recycled through standard recycling channels.

Alarming fact: 50% of the plastic the world uses is used just once, then thrown away.

What we do: 25 L'OCCITANE products are already available in eco-refills, which use 65 to 90% less plastic than a standard bottle.

Alarming fact: Humans have produced more plastic over the last 10 years than during the entire last century.

What we do: By reducing the thickness of our packaging, we're saving up to 200 tons of plastic every year* and we are working on ways to replace other unnecessary plastics such as cellophane. *On the basis of our 2020 numbers

Little things we do that make a big difference

Let’s reduce waste together!

This summer, we invite you to take part in your own #cleanuptheworld litter picking initiative!

This year, many of our plans had to be rescheduled, but whilst we’ve been in Lockdown our beautiful beaches, waterways and parks have still been impacted by plastic pollution and deserve our protection now more than ever! We know it may be hard for you to get to an organised public space cleaning event so we would like to invite you to carry out your own private clean up on any beach, waterway, or local park!

How to #cleanuptheworld?

1. WHAT TO PACK!
Bag to collect the rubbish
Reusable gloves that you can wash after use (e.g. gardening gloves, washing up gloves, etc…)
Something to safely transport your gloves in after your beach clean, until you are able to wash them
Hand sanitiser to clean your hands

2. BE SAFE AND BE SMART!
Only carry out a clean if you feel comfortable to
Recycle as much of the rubbish as possible
Don’t forget to wear gloves, cleaning your hands immediately after the beach clean, and again after sorting the rubbish
If you are carrying out a beach clean, please follow the guidelines by Surfers Against Sewage HERE

3. SHARE!
Tell us how well you did! Count the number of pieces of rubbish you have collected and log it HERE the 1st of September, we will compile all responses so we know how many pieces of rubbish the L’Occi-Family has cleaned off our public spaces!
Take pictures of your clean haul and share on Instagram, using #cleanuptheworld, tagging @loccitane_uk_ire, the person to share the biggest haul will win a hamper of “reducing waste” products!

Happy cleaning! :)

TerraCycle®: our recycling partner

A pioneering (and very green!) company, TerraCycle® is the world leader in the collection and recycling of post-consumer waste that's usually considered non-recyclable. It teams up with companies who want to find ways to recycle or upcycle their waste. TerraCycle® can recycle plastic cups, toothbrushes, pens, batteries, art supplies, cigarette waste... It's an incredible list – that's incredibly long! Through partnerships with brands like L'OCCITANE, it takes used packaging and turns it into raw materials that can be used to make new items.

Now, more than ever, we must aim for sustainable solutions, a cleaner environment and a more circular economy. TerraCycle® is helping to make this possible.
More on TerraCycle

Join the refill revolution and do your bit in the fight against plastic pollution.

L’OCCITANE urges consumers to reduce their single use plastic purchases and make the switch to more sustainable, refillable options to fight the waves of plastic pollution. Using eco-refills for your beauty and cosmetics products is an additional way we can all reduce plastic consumption and pollution on an enormous scale!

Over the last couple of years, we have made ambitious targets with regards to reducing our plastic consumption and we are well on track to achieve them. For example, by 2022, 100% of our bottles will be made from 100% recycled PET plastic.

Eco-Refills use 69% to 90% less plastic compared to our regular packaging.

ECO-DESIGN: RETHINKING OUR PACKAGING

We like to keep our packaging simple with no frills or excess. By reducing packaging thickness, we've already saved 28 tons of plastic. We are currently planning to replace our cellophane protective seals with a new, eco-friendly, compostable solution made from FSC-certified wood fibre. Watch this space!

Respecting Biodiversity Commitment

We love Provence and the South of France. After all, that's where our roots lie. So it's only natural that we should want to protect and promote the biodiversity of the Mediterranean Basin. This "biodiversity hotspot" is one of the richest ecosystems in the world. We intend to do our bit to protect this precious environment.
