Which conditioner should you choose?

Conditioner is a care product used after washing your hair: it helps detangle, smooth the hair fibre and bring softness to the lengths. It leaves hair softer and easier to style.

To choose the right conditioner, it’s important to consider your hair type. At L’Occitane en Provence, several ranges are designed to meet these needs precisely. Dry, damaged or coloured hair can turn to our Intense Repair range, which helps nourish and strengthen the hair fibre. Fine and fragile hair will appreciate lighter textures like Gentle & Balance, created for hold and lightness. If your scalp tends to become oily quickly, balancing care such as Purifying Freshness helps keep hair fresh and airy. Finally, Gentle & Balance suits all hair types, especially when you’re seeking gentle care for daily use.

To start your ritual, you can also discover our L'Occitane en Provence shampoos, designed to gently cleanse hair before applying a suitable conditioner.

Should conditioner be applied to the roots or just the lengths?

Conditioner is mainly applied to the lengths and ends, where hair needs care most. These areas are most exposed to external aggressions, friction and repeated styling.

It’s generally not necessary to apply it to the scalp, which naturally produces sebum to protect itself and maintain balance. Applying a rich care product to the roots can weigh hair down and make roots feel greasier. By targeting the lengths, you preserve lightness and movement.

To care for the scalp in a suitable way, it’s best to use specific products such as scalp care, designed to respect its natural balance.

Mask and conditioner: what’s the difference?

Conditioner and hair mask are complementary, but they don’t address the same needs. Conditioner acts quickly: it detangles, softens and makes styling easier after each wash. The mask, meanwhile, is more concentrated and used occasionally to nourish, repair or strengthen the hair fibre in depth.

Day-to-day, conditioner is enough to keep hair supple and easy to style. Once or twice a week, you can replace it with a mask for more intensive care, especially if your hair is dry or sensitised. To find out more, explore our hair masks.
